Facial Brown Spots – Causes, Picture, Symptoms And Treatment

Facial Brown Spots: Introduction

If the skin is exposed to the sun’s rays, it can lead to increase in the cell production of melanocytes that lead to rising levels of melanin in the skin. This can lead to age spots also known as brown/dark/sun/liver spots The presence of melanin turns the skin darker. Age spots are essentially flat spots on the skin occurring in areas exposed to the rays of the sun. These are also referred to as senile lentigo or solar lentigines.

The spots appear in the form of blemishes on the skin. The range is from light brown to reddish-black. A well known cause for this condition is exposure to the sun. Brown spots are also known as hyperpigmentation. The name age spots have been given because this problem commences in the middle years. Spots appear on the face and other regions of the body. From laser therapy to electrosurgery and cryosurgery, there are many methods to get rid of age spots.

Facial brown spots can result from exposing the skin to the rays of the sun as well as aging and genetics, stress, pregnancy, lack of vitamins, or liver related problems. Brown spots are harmless but they can be disfiguring. This is why people often resort to either home remedies or medical treatment. Melasma or brown spots appear on the skin of men and women both. But a majority of the persons who develop these facial brown spots are women.

Those with dark rather than fair skin, like Latin, Hispanic, N.African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Native American, African-American, and Mediterranean origin are more prone to develop this problem. Those who have blood relatives with this condition will be more prone to brown facial spots too.

Causes of Facial Brown Spots

What leads to melasma has not been clearly identified and scientists have suggested several potential causes for this condition.

The mechanism behind facial brown spots is simple. It takes place when the cells making the color or melanocytes in your skin yield too much. People with darker skins are more likely to have this condition than fair skinned people.

Common causes for facial brown spots are discussed below:

Exposure to the Sun

Ultraviolet sun’s rays activate melanocytes and small amounts of exposure can lead to age spots actually returning after they have faded. Exposure to the sun is the reason why melasma gets worse in the summers. This is also the reason for recurring brown spots. UV or ultraviolet light in the rays of the sun can lead to facial brown spots.

Pregnancy

When facial brown spots or melasma occur in women who are expecting, it is the result of changing hormones. It is known as chloasma/pregnancy mask.

Hormonal factors

Birth control pill (The Pill) and HRT can also trigger melasma. Brown spots can be the result of hormonal fluctuations.

Skin Diseases & Other Disorders

Certain diseases trigger the production of brown spots such as acne, melasma, Linea Fusca, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and Riehl’s melanosis. Other disorders which can also lead to age spots include Addison’s disease, pituitary tumors, hemochromatosis and liver disease.

Risk Factor

Persons with a history of sun exposure or use of tanning lights/beds are also prone to brown spots.
