The Relationship of Vitamin D and Breast Cancer

Deficiency of Vitamin D may be a risk factor for premenopausal breast cancer

According to a recent study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, deficiency of Vitamin D is a major cause of breast cancer in women. This study team was comprised of scientists from various organizations and they reported that women in Saudi Arabia have 6 times more chances of breast cancer because of low vitamin D level. Scientists have suggested others to increase the level of vitamin D to save their life from this life-taking diseases. The research took data from 120 case studies and level of breast cancer cases were in equal amount. Scientists found that women in Saudi Arabia have less than 25 nmol/ L of Vitamin D and have six times more risk for evasive breast cancer.

Indoor lifestyle and Vitamin D relationship

Research study also elaborated that women in Saudi Arabia have lowest level of Vitamin D, although they reside in high ultraviolet sunrays exposure. The major reason is modern indoor lifestyle, religious practices of full dress to hide themselves and food supply. This research study found that level of serum concentrations were an average 9.4 ng/ mL in breast cancer cases. A professor from UCSD Department of Family Medicine, Dr. Cedric Garland told that results were not surprising as many studies have suggested the need of vitamin D for women’s health. Women need exceeding level of vitamin D (approx. 50 nmol/L) to prevent themselves from breast cancer.

Perry Holman, Executive Director for Vitamin D society, told that optimal level of vitamin D can reduce breast cancer cases drastically in Canadian Women. The deficiency of vitamin D continues to be a growing problem in society today and high risks of breast cancer and many other women diseases attached with it. Level of vitamin D is lower in food and only salmon and mushrooms are two natural foods which are exposed to ultraviolet rays and contain vitamin D. Juices, cereal, margarines and dairy products also include small volume of Vitamin D. An effective method, as per suggested by health physicians is exposure of your body to the sun.

Dr. Cedric Garland and his team collected the samples of 600 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. In fewer cases, women had been diagnosed a month earlier about presence of breast cancer and in some cases they had been found several months ago. This analysis has been published in the Journal: Cancer Causes & Control, mentioned an increasing trend in which lower volume of vitamin D is directly causing premenopausal breast cancer in the women. An important review associated with this study explained that effect was extremely strong within 90 days of breast cancer diagnosis. In other words, some big drop of vitamin D in short period of time could cause small tumors and grown as tinny tumors in next few months equal to the size of an olive.

Effects of Pycnogenol

A research published in Journal of Reproductive Medicine mentioned that use of Pycnogenol small doze can result in lower climacteric symptoms such as heart palpitations, night sweats and hot flashes. Low dose of Pycnogenol might improve premenopausal signs and symptoms in women. In this research, women with lower level of Serum vitamin D had 3-times increased risk of breast cancer as compared to women with high level of Vitamin D. This is likely to be the point where tumors actively appear in blood vessels. Breast cancer risk is also associated with Calcium-sending Receptor. This receptor is found in human parathyroid glands, such as breasts, colon and kidneys. Calcium-sending receptor plays an important role by influencing renal calcium reabsorption and parathyroid hormones to maintain concentration level of extracellular calcium.

Despite of several research studies about Vitamin D and increasing cause of breast cancer in women, it has been found that deficiency of Vitamin D and Calcium have been causing breast cancer and their anti-carcinogenic properties have detailed it clearly. In Some studies, it have been clearly found that blood levels of Vitamin Dis inversely linked/associated with breast cancer. The phenomena of breast cancer in postmenopausal women is different as compared to premenopausal women. When we look into vitamin D, it is evident that bacterial vaginitis, increased rate of C-section, gestational diabetes, infertility and preeclampsia are because of lowest level of Vitamin D in mothers.

High level of Vitamin D in body decreases estradiol

Low level of Vitamin D can cause seizures, type-1 diabetes, hypocalcaemia, brittle bones, skeletal malformations, impaired growth and small size in newborns.  Insulin resistance, poor mood, hip fractures, bone loss and agitates thoughts in both baby and mother are resulting from deficiency of vitamin D.  According to a research study published in 2010, vitamin D is important for the health of pregnant women and lower level of Vitamin D was associated with adverse outcomes for mother and baby. Estrogen dominance is one of the major causes of infertility in women and it is indirectly associated with level of vitamin D. High dose of Vitamin D is capable to decrease progesterone and estradiol.

Joelle Welsh has studied the effects of Vitamin D for 25 years and she has told in her research papers that vitamin D is as strong and powerful for human health as today’s anti-cancer formulas. She told that effect of vitamin D is similar to Tamoxifen- a medicine used for treatment of breast cancer in women. Similar to Tamoxifen, Vitamin D enters the cells and triggers the process dead cells. Risk of breast cancer is decreased by 30% when level of vitamin D is as high as 40 ng/mL. Some research studies have suggested that 2000 UI of vitamin D per day can drop the risk of breast cancer by 50% or more. During pregnancy, women need calcium for baby and her skeleton and this would be possible without Calcium and Vitamin D.

Deficiency of Vitamin D might cause hip fracture, whereas increased level of vitamin D in elderly women would increase the life expectancy by 6 percent. A recent study has also blown the facts that had been linked to skin cancer when exposure to UV Sun rays. Since more people are deficient of vitamin D, they are more vulnerable to the cancer and other life-taking diseases. The benefits of enough exposure to sun rays have been answered by many health researchers and scientist and indoor lifestyle should be changed to overcome the issue of deficient vitamin-D society.
